The Promise of Prom
For most students, their senior prom is the culmination of four years of hard work. After hours of studying, endless late nights and more tests than you could count, prom is the final piece of the puzzle before graduation. A night to dress up with your friends (and significant other) and dance the night away before heading out into the world and starting the next phase—college.
Unfortunately for one Virginia teen named Clare and her boyfriend James, prom night would end up being an evening they’d rather forget.
A Night to Look Forward To
Clare and her boyfriend James were beyond excited for their senior prom. James had purchased the tickets well in advance and they both were looking forward to a night of dancing with friends. The theme for the dance was “Twilight in Paris” and for the two young love birds, it seemed like nothing could ruin their happiness.
Sadly, once they arrived at prom, things would not be going their way.
The Perfect Dress
In preparation for the big night, Clare went to six different stores before finding the perfect dress. She knew it was the one the moment she laid eyes on it. A stunning, glittery spectacle made of silver sequins, the dress was sure to be a stunner on the dance floor.
However, the dress had to pass one crucial test.
The Fingertip Conundrum
According to Clare, all dresses worn at prom had to pass the fingertip test if they were to be allowed. This would prevent anyone from wearing anything too short or revealing. Clare was worried her dress wouldn’t make the cut but was very surprised when hers made it just past the tip.
Now all that was left was waiting for prom night!
The Day Finally Arrives
The day of prom was a flurry of primping and making sure everything was perfect. Clare made sure everything from her hair to her shoes were on point, and boyfriend James was looking quite dapper as well. Clare attempted to check her dress one more time with dress code compliance, and found that her dress lingered dangerously close to her fingertips.
Could this be the end of her special night before it even began?
Remaining Calm and Graceful
After testing out a few dance moves, Clare determined that the dress would indeed ride up if she tried any exaggerated movements; therefore, she would have to move gracefully and refrain from dancing. However, that wasn’t her main reason for going anyway.
So, with her confidence high, Clare and James hit the town for a night they would never forget.
Trouble at the Entrance
Unfortunately, the moment Clare and James arrived at the prom, which was hosted at a local Methodist Church, she was approached almost immediately by a member of the administration, Ann Duncan. Clare was informed her dress was too short and that she could not enter the event. However, Clare wasn’t ready to go without a fight, simply asking “what is the rule?”
Of course, Mrs. Duncan knew the answer, but would she let Clare in?
Thwarting a Disaster
At first Mrs. Duncan stood by her decision, stating the dress was too short regardless of Clare’s excuses and that she would have to leave. However, Clare refused. Placing her arms at her sides, Clare demonstrated to the administrator that her dress was fingertip length.
Would it be enough to get her into the dance?
A Stern Warning
While Mrs. Duncan still believed the dress was too short and not appropriate for the prom, she allowed Clare and her boyfriend to enter the dance. However, she warned them to make sure the dress didn’t ride up and that she would be keeping an eye out.
Do you think Clare will make it to the end of the evening?
Enjoying a Magical Night
At first, prom was everything Clare had hoped it would be. Despite the bumpy start, she enjoyed great music, food and conversation with her friends. She even noticed girls attending the dance with dresses shorter than hers, something she found amusing since the administrator had been so quick to point out her dress which was actually compliant.
Unfortunately, all good things must eventually come to an end.
Too Much Control
According to Clare’s boyfriend, James, the event seemed overly chaperoned. It seemed the school’s administration was heavily involved in watching over the event, which seemed to suck the fun right out of the room and make things slightly awkward.
Of course, things were about to get even more uncomfortable.
Strange Looks from the Peanut Gallery
Clare and James began to noticed that several of the dads chaperoning the event were staring at Clare a little too often. Clare revealed to the local media that they would stare and then talk among themselves, making her really uncomfortable. Checking her dress, she realized it was riding up in the back.
If Clare only knew, the ogling dads would soon be the least of her worries.
Angry and Disturbed
When writing about the event, Clare had this to say about the dirty dads. “I think that it is sick and wrong that they assigned them to sit on a balcony above us and look down on us and single us out for our clothes or dancing.”
Administrator on the Warpath
Unfortunately, Clare’s bad night was about to take a turn for the worse. Mrs. Duncan decided to storm over, and pull her from the dance floor. Taking her into the hallway with another parent, Clare was appalled by what Duncan had to say.
You won’t believe the reason they escorted her out of the room.
Seducing Her Fellow Students
“She took me into a corner in the hallway, with another woman – who I’m assuming was a parent chaperone – and told me that some of the dads who were chaperoning had complained that my dancing was too provocative and that I was going to cause the young men at the prom to think impure thoughts.”
The Blame Game
Clare couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Did the school honestly think she was responsible for other men and their so-called “impure thoughts.” To Clare, it was body shaming and victim blaming mentality and she was not going to take it lying down.
Standing Up for Herself
Refusing to take things lying down, Clare once again showed Mrs. Duncan that her dress complied with what the school deemed an appropriate dress length. However, Mrs. Duncan was hearing none of it. At this point it seemed they were getting nowhere, so James decided to jump in and try to diffuse the situation.
We’re Leaving, But We Want Our Money
James tried to approach Mrs. Duncan with a calm disposition despite his disgust. He explained that Clare had passed the required tests, but at this point they would just like to leave and have their tickets refunded. Of course, Mrs. Duncan didn’t want to hear any excuses at this point and both James and Clare were escorted from the prom.
Do What’s Right
Currently, both Clare and James are still waiting for the $25 they paid for each ticket. They’ve spoken to the media regarding their prom night gone wrong, but the school continues to stand by its policy and claim Clare was in the wrong.
Here’s hoping that the school does the right thing in the end, and we hope Clare and James can move passed this one horrendous night that was supposed to be magical.
