Seeing snow for the first time as a child can be a magical experience. If you aren’t in an area where it snows often then traveling somewhere to see a winter wonderland can be magical. Everyone remembers the first time they stepped in snow and soon after started to play in it.

Smiley the Golden Retriever is a dog that has made a huge impact on the rescued dog community. Smiley is a great dog who has lived a great life despite being blind since birth. Ever since when he was rescued Smiley was at the forefront of a great operation.

Smiley the dog was sadly born blind therefore he never got to see what the world looked like. He was born into a rough environment. Smiley deserved better than this and someone saw that. That someone is Joanne George.

17. Given A Second Chance

Joanne George gave Smiley and hundreds of other dogs a second chance when she rescued them from the terrible conditions they were kept in. Smiley and several other pups were trapped in a kennel and it wasn’t until Joanne George showed up that they would be rescued.

A quote Joanne gave The Washington Post sums up the conditions the dogs were kept in pretty well; “We were in a barn with about 85 dogs, it took us five tries to go in there because we were trying not to vomit from the smell.”

15. Smiley’s Early Life

A lot of Smiley’s puppy life is unknown due to him being found in a barn. However, we can assume he was separated from his parents at some point. Being blind it couldn’t have been easy for Smiley but he is a trooper and made it through alright.

Joanne couldn’t find a good home for Smiley and that was because his home was with her. She had helped several hundred dogs find the perfect home but it wasn’t until later that she realized Smiley’s perfect home was with her.

After being adopted by Joanne Smiley started to take back to normal life fairly well. He got back up on his feet and used his other senses to move around and interact with Joanne and others. He is now doing bigger and better things than when he was stuck in the barn.

Joanne saw that Smiley was more than your average dog and decided that he would be perfect in helping people in nursing homes and retirement homes. Smiley was considered a therapy dog and that is where he got his name from. The fact that he made so many people smile.

Even in Smiley’s older years, he would still show qualities of being a puppy. This is especially true when he started to try new experiences. One of these experiences was being out in the snow for the first time. Even though he was an old dog he still ran around as if he was a puppy.

Smiley’s first time in the snow is how many dogs act when they first see snow. At first, it is curiosity then they want to play in it. Soon enough Smiley was running around and playing in the snow. He tired himself out that day and that goes to show just how positive Smiley was despite his condition.

As Smiley got older not only was he blind but his hearing started to go as well. Luckily, Joanne planned a way for her to still interact with Smiley. Using a series of high pitched noises she was able to communicate with Smiley even after his hearing left completely.

Smiley has grown in popularity tremendously. He has his own Instagram page that has garnered a few hundred thousand followers. He also has a Facebook page which is doing just as well. Smiley’s first snow experience was taped and the video now has over a million views. What a popular pup!

6. Consider A Rescue

Smiley’s journey and story lead many to want to adopt a rescue dog. Especially consider rescuing a dog with a defect as Smiley had. These dogs are the least likely dogs to be adopted and they need a home all the same. You can change a dog’s life just as much as they can change yours.

Smiley the dog will live on in everyone’s hearts by the legacy he left behind for all rescue dogs. He will forever be a fluffy puppy that will experience the snow every day. The legacy he left being will truly change how people see rescue dogs and he could save hundreds of dogs from bad lives.

After Smiley was adopted he was able to finally live the life he deserved. Living the high life was quite a change that Smiley wasn’t expecting. Having a warm home and a nice dish to eat from was all Smiley ever needed.

3. From Rags To Riches

Smiley not only rose from rags to riches he also inspired many people to help out other rescue dogs the same way he was rescued. Along the way Smiley made a lot of friends many of which were dogs that had similar conditions to Smiley.
