When Simone Anderson lost half her body weight in under a year, she bravely took to Instagram to share her transformation. She hoped she would inspire others in their own journeys, but instead, she found that doubters were quick to body shame and attack her. Read on to learn how the young woman responded and see what she looks like today.
Starting Her Journey
Freelance makeup artist and hair stylist Simone Anderson weighed in at 169 kgs (373 pounds) before beginning her weight loss journey. On her Facebook page, Simone shared, “I was always using the excuse, ‘I’m too busy to work out and eat healthy,’ when in reality, I was just being lazy and unprepared.” She told interviewers that the lifestyle change was sparked when she began “realizing how much I was turning down and the fact I was only really living a half life.”
Bad Eating Habits
Before Simone embarked on a lifestyle change, she reported that her diet was high in carbs and fats and consisted of a lot of processed foods. These foods didn’t provide nutritional benefit, but instead converted to excess body fat that put her health at risk. Although the processed foods were more convenient in the moment, they were wreaking havoc on the 24-year-old’s health and negatively affecting her quality of life.
Documenting Her “Journey to Health”
Simone took to Instagram to share what she called her “Journey to Health.” The online documentation provided her with ongoing accountability and motivation, and she posted photo updates once a month to show her progress. Her Instagram account now inspires over 214,000 followers in their own journeys to health.
Simone’s Weight Loss Diet
When Simone decided to make a lifestyle change, she knew the processed foods high in fat and carbs had to go. In describing her weight loss diet, she once shared, “I would have a protein shake for breakfast, a piece of fruit for morning tea, an omelette or something similar for lunch, nuts for afternoon tea or a protein bar, and then meat and vegetables for dinner.” After the switch to nutritious foods with plenty of protein, the pounds began falling off in no time.
Simone’s Weight Loss Workout
If Simone’s weight loss was going to be sustainable, she knew she had to find a variety of exercises she could enjoy for years to come. The variety keeps her body guessing and prevents boredom. The Australian social media sensation reports that she does pump class for an hour three times a week, plays netball or basketball three days a week, and goes on a run once a week— and that’s all on weekdays. On the weekends, Simone switches things up with a long hike, a game of water polo, or a swim.
The Unavoidable Excess Skin
After changing her diet and starting an exercise regimen, Simone lost half her body weight in less than a year. The rapid weight loss presented a new challenge: excess skin. She once shared, “It was not something I was ashamed of or embarrassed of or anything like that. To me, it showed hard work and what I had achieved…. [but] it would rub and cause bleeding under the skin, and I would get belly button infections. It was just incredibly uncomfortable.”
Showing It Off
The excess skin marked a new chapter in Simone’s journey to health, but she continued to share her progress with thousands of followers on social media. Sharing intimate looks at her struggles, victories, and body changes took courage. When one interviewer asked how it felt to inspire so many online, Simone responded, “It is still something I have not wrapped my head around. I am so thankful … that I had the balls to put myself out there without knowing what was to come!”
Body Shamed After Posting a Photo
While thousands were inspired by Simone’s photos, some took the opportunity to body shame her in the comments of a before-and-after post. Many were skeptical that she had actually lost all that weight and critiqued her hair, eyebrows, cheekbones, skin color, and even ears as evidence that she wasn’t the same person. Simone later confessed, “Every single comment that called me out for being fake and a liar really bothered me far more than it should.”
Shutting Down All the Haters
To prove that her weight loss was real, Simone reposted the before-and-after photo with a third image revealing her excess skin. She wrote, “Throughout my whole journey, I have tried to be so honest about the whole experience and tell people it exactly as it’s happened, so to be called fake hurt a lot. And then when it came to posting about my loose skin, well, that was equally as tough. So here we go—I hope this helps all the ‘non-believers’….”
How She Earned Her Body: From 169 Kg to 83 Kg
After posting the photo of her excess skin with a powerful statement to quiet the doubters, it was easy to see that Simone had put in the hard work to earn her new body. Through healthy eating, consistent exercise, and intense commitment, she dropped from 169 kg to 83 kg in just 11 months.
After Simone reached her weight loss goal, she had to learn to look away from the scale for new measures of fitness to keep herself motivated. She once shared on Instagram, “Since boxing training, I have piled on 5 kg, but for once in my life, I am not judging myself purely on my weight. I have never been fitter, I have never been more toned, and most importantly, I have never felt more amazing! Weight doesn’t and should never define your thoughts and views of yourself. We are far more than that number staring back at us!”
Time and Patience Change Everything
When Simone posts before-and-after photos on Instagram, it’s amazing to see how a little time and a lot of patience can lead to massive changes. These posts inspire and encourage many others in their own wellness journeys. With one before-and-after photo, Simone shared, “92 kg gone and an entire[ly] new outlook on life and nutrition! Never give up, keep on pushing, [and] those hard days will all be worth it in the end. You have got this!”
But the Outcome Isn’t Easy
While many people use social media as a highlight reel of their best days, Simone doesn’t shy away from sharing the difficult days of her journey. In order to get to where she is today, the young woman had to undergo multiple surgeries, and recovering from surgery isn’t glamorous or easy. After one nine-hour procedure, Simone shared, “Yesterday I was in a lot of pain and I was quite miserable. I had the best care possible, but it was tough.”
Breast Augmentation and Lift
As part of that nine-hour procedure, Simone underwent a breast augmentation and lift. Rapid and extreme weight loss can affect the shape, projection, and skin elasticity of women’s breasts. Surgeons may use nearby tissue or silicone implants to reshape and lift women’s breasts after these drastic changes occur. After her surgery, Simone happily reported, “I have a tiny, tiny waist, big hips, and breasts that are perfectly in proportion to my body.”
To remove the excess skin around her middle, Simone also underwent abdominoplasty, a procedure commonly known as a tummy tuck. Her surgeon removed skin and tightened muscles found in the middle and lower abdomen. After healing from the surgery, patients have a thinner, firmer midsection and find it easier to see the way their body has become lean and strong underneath that excess skin.
Bra-Line Back Lift
A bra-line back lift formed another portion of Simone’s nine hours in plastic surgery. This procedure involves removing fat deposits and reconnecting the skin in a patient’s upper back. The result is a tighter, firmer back. The surgery can be performed on men or women, but women have the added benefit of easily hiding any scars beneath their bra line.
While the bra-line back lift helped reshape the upper half of Simone’s back, a full back lift ensured her lower back also reflected her hard work and new figure. After removing excess skin in this area, patients see a slimmer waist and lifted buttocks. This surgery helped ensure Simone would look and feel better. Before the surgery, she explained, “When I was sports training, I would need to wear compression pants under sports tights to keep [the excess skin] all in place and stop it from bouncing up and down.”
Bikini Body Ready
Immediately after the surgery, despite the initial pain, Simone was already thrilled with the results and couldn’t wait for summer. At the time, she said, “My body is so, so amazing. I couldn’t be happier.” She went on, “I cannot wait for summer… I’ll be fully recovered and definitely be in a bikini.”
Happiness Is This Right Here
Simone’s new bikini body was only the beginning of her happily ever after. Her Instagram continues to show how the inspirational woman is still training and leading a healthy lifestyle. One recent post even celebrated a year of happily dating her boyfriend Trent. She shared, “I honestly never ever thought I would find this sort of love, a love I saw portrayed in movies and very rarely saw in my day to day life. I feel so blessed and lucky.”
